Disgruntled retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, are gearing up for mass protests against the state government’s alleged neglect of their welfare.

The pensioners, some who retired as far back as the 1980s, are reportedly receiving abysmal monthly pensions as low as N1,000, N1,500, and N2,000. This, they claim, is barely enough to survive in today’s harsh economic climate.

Broken Promises and Deaf Ears

The union leaders, Mr. Ekpeyong Ekpo and Mr. Cosmos Essien, expressed deep disappointment at the government’s failure to fulfill its promise of a minimum pension increase.

“Last year,” Mr. Ekpo stated, “the government promised a minimum of N20,000 for pre-1997 retirees and N30,000 for those who retired afterwards. This promise raised our hopes, especially considering the rising cost of healthcare which many of us desperately need.”

Despite repeated appeals, the pensioners claim their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. They allege that the government has not only failed to implement the promised raise, but has also neglected to address the backlog of unpaid pensions and gratuities.

A Glimmer of Hope and a Renewed Plea

The union acknowledged Governor Umo Eno’s recent efforts in paying over N14 billion in gratuities to various pensioner groups within his first nine months in office. They expressed hope that this goodwill would extend to addressing their current concerns.

“We urge the governor,” stated Mr. Essien, “to continue demonstrating his compassionate leadership by addressing the outstanding pension arrears of over N40 billion. We also believe establishing a dedicated pension commission or board would streamline communication and improve the management of our welfare.”

A Dwindling Community in Need

The NUP estimates their membership to be between 25,000 and 28,000, with a constant flux due to deaths and new retirees joining the system. They fear that the current situation is causing unnecessary hardship and leading to a decline in their community.

A Call to Action

The pensioners’ protest threat highlights the urgent need for the Akwa Ibom State Government to address their concerns. A fair and sustainable pension system is essential to ensure the well-being of our senior citizens who have dedicated their lives to public service.
