The United States is stepping up diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US representative to the United Nations, revealed that numerous discussions have taken place with regional countries. A key point of these talks has been urging these nations to discourage Iran from getting involved in the Sudanese conflict.
“We’ve had extensive conversations with countries in the region,” Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield explained to reporters. “During these discussions, we’ve encouraged them to use their influence with other countries, like Iran, to stay out of the conflict.”
This diplomatic push comes amidst reports suggesting a potential shift in the balance of power within Sudan.
According to Reuters, a senior Sudanese army source claims that Iranian-made armed drones have significantly aided the army. This newfound advantage has reportedly stalled the progress of the rival paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and allowed the army to reclaim territory near the capital.
The potential involvement of Iran in the Sudanese conflict raises concerns about further escalation and regional instability. The United States hopes that by encouraging regional powers to dissuade Iran, a peaceful resolution can be found and the suffering of the Sudanese people can be brought to an end.
