Rafael Nadal, at 37, expressed his joy at making a winning return to the court at the Barcelona Open on Tuesday. The victory held significant meaning for the Spanish tennis legend, who has endured a challenging period due to injuries. Nadal secured his spot in the second round with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over Flavio Cobolli, marking his first tournament appearance since January and his return to clay since the 2022 French Open.

Nadal’s absence from the ATP Tour dates back to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International, followed by a withdrawal from the Australian Open due to his ongoing physical issues. Last week’s Monte-Carlo Masters also saw Nadal opt out, citing his body’s lack of readiness for competitive play.

Reflecting on his injury struggles, Nadal admitted, “Every time it’s more difficult and especially when you’re at an advanced age it makes things even tougher.” Nevertheless, he found solace in being able to return to the tour, practice with fellow players, and engage in competitive matches. He emphasized the significance of these moments, stating, “Still enough enjoyable to keep doing it.”

Despite doubts surrounding his ability to compete at the highest level again, Nadal remains determined to showcase his prowess, particularly at the upcoming French Open. The clay court tournament holds a special place in Nadal’s heart, having clinched a record 14 titles, with his most recent victory in 2022. With the French Open main draw set to commence on May 26, Nadal is eager to add to his illustrious Grand Slam tally.

Nadal’s journey continues as he prepares to face fourth seed Alex de Minaur in Barcelona, a venue where he has triumphed a record 12 times, with the main court named in his honor. As he navigates his comeback, Nadal’s resilience and unwavering passion for the sport serve as inspiration to fans worldwide.
