Officials from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have closed down an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket located at the China General Chamber of Commerce.

The FCCPC took this action following an investigation prompted by reports from outraged Nigerians regarding a discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese supermarket. The policy restricted entry exclusively to Chinese citizens and barred Nigerians. The closure occurred after officials interrogated workers on the premises.

Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager of the complex, confirmed that while Nigerians from outside the complex were unable to shop at the supermarket, Nigerians already within the complex were allowed access.

The supermarket remains closed as the consumer protection agency suspects that some individuals may be hiding inside to avoid confrontation with the agency.

The FCCPC’s actions are part of its efforts to combat discrimination and unfair treatment of customers in the market. The agency has been proactive in responding to reports from Nigerians and enforcing changes in market policies accordingly.
