Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga champions, under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso, maintained their remarkable streak of late-game heroics with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Stuttgart on Saturday. Robert Andrich’s stoppage-time strike, coming in the sixth minute of added time, secured a vital point for Leverkusen and extended their unbeaten run to an impressive 46 games across all competitions this season.

Alonso, visibly surprised by his team’s penchant for late drama, expressed his struggle to comprehend their uncanny ability to snatch results in the dying moments of matches. Leverkusen’s tally of 10 goals scored to win or equalize games in stoppage time this season underscores the remarkable resilience and never-say-die attitude instilled within the squad.

Andrich’s late heroics marked another chapter in Leverkusen’s season of thrilling comebacks, with his 96th-minute strike following closely on the heels of Josip Stanisic’s seventh-minute stoppage-time goal in the previous week’s draw against Borussia Dortmund. Despite the jubilant scenes that ensued, Alonso’s reaction this time around was marked by disbelief rather than exuberance, a testament to the sheer improbability of the feat.

In contrast, Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness voiced his disappointment with the referee’s handling of the added time, lamenting the extension that ultimately allowed Leverkusen to find the equalizer. Hoeness criticized the decision to allow the free kick that led to Andrich’s goal, labeling the match as “hectic and very emotional.”

For Leverkusen, the draw against Stuttgart maintains their pursuit of an unprecedented achievement – becoming the first side to finish a league season undefeated. Buoyed by their historic Bundesliga triumph earlier in April, Alonso’s side now set their sights on European glory, with a Europa League semi-final clash against Roma looming large. Additionally, Leverkusen’s journey to the German Cup final, where they are set to face second-division Kaiserslautern, offers the prospect of a historic treble for the club.

As Leverkusen’s remarkable season continues to unfold, their penchant for late-game theatrics adds an extra layer of intrigue to their pursuit of glory on multiple fronts.
