The ancient town of Ikorodu in Lagos State is gearing up for its annual Oro festival, scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024. This deeply rooted tradition holds cultural significance for the male descendants of the town.

As per the official notification issued by the Ayangburen Palace and signed by Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the festival will encompass both daytime and nighttime rituals. Following a longstanding tradition, all females are advised to remain indoors within their homes and refrain from venturing out during the festivities.

The Oro festival is characterized by a unique blend of daytime processions and, in some areas, the echoing of high-pitched sounds throughout the community. The core belief behind this tradition dictates that females should be absent during the sacred ritualistic aspects of the festival.

While attempts were made to reach officials like the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command for their perspectives, no response was received at the time of this report. Efforts to obtain further clarification from the Ikorodu Palace also proved unsuccessful.

This annual celebration serves as a cornerstone of Ikorodu’s cultural identity, highlighting the town’s unique traditions and beliefs. As the festival approaches, residents prepare to observe the customs, with the understanding that female residents will remain indoors during the designated period.
