Labour Unions Demand Review of Electricity Tariff Hike and Privatization

Nigeria’s top labour leaders, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, have spoken out strongly against the recent electricity tariff increase. In a joint address during the May Day celebration, they urged the government to reconsider the hike, calling it insensitive and poorly timed considering the current economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.

  • The Bottom Line

Why it Matters

On April 3rd, 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised electricity prices for customers who receive 20 hours of power supply daily. This significant increase, from N66 per kilowatt-hour to N225, has been met with widespread criticism. Many argue that the timing is cruel, considering the already struggling economy and the lack of consistent power supply.

Labour’s Demands:

The labour leaders presented an 18-point list of demands, including:

  • Reviewing the Electricity Privatization: They believe the privatization process has not delivered the promised improvements and should be reassessed with the possibility of reversal.
  • Immediate Rollout of CNG Buses: This would help reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuels and address environmental concerns.
  • Tax Relief for Informal Economy: A one-year moratorium on taxes and levies would provide some breathing room for small businesses and informal workers.

The Bottom Line

Labour unions are calling for a major shift in the government’s approach to electricity and the economy. They believe the recent tariff hike is unfair and unsustainable, and demand a more people-centered approach that prioritizes affordability and economic relief for all Nigerians.
