San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama has made NBA history with an extraordinary debut season, securing the Rookie of the Year award in a unanimous fashion. The 20-year-old sensation garnered all 99 first-place votes from selected media members, becoming the first player since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015–16 to achieve such a feat.

In an illustrious list of Spurs rookies, Wembanyama joins the ranks of legends like Tim Duncan and David Robertson, marking the third time a Spurs player has claimed this prestigious title.

Additionally, the French phenom becomes the first-ever French player to receive the Rookie of the Year distinction, adding another layer of significance to his achievement.

Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder emerged as the runner-up, nearly unanimous in his selection, receiving votes in 98 out of 99. Meanwhile, notable mentions include Miami Heat’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., Dallas Mavericks’ Dereck Lively II, Golden State Warriors’ Brandin Podziemski, and Charlotte Hornets’ Brandon Miller, who rounded up the top positions.

Wembanyama’s debut season lived up to the immense hype surrounding him, solidifying his status as one of the NBA’s brightest prospects since LeBron James. His remarkable statistical achievements set him apart, as he became the first player in league history to amass at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 3-pointers made in a single season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-4, Wembanyama showcased his defensive prowess by leading the league in both total blocks (254) and blocks per game (3.6), a feat only achieved by one other rookie in NBA history. Furthermore, he joins the elite company of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson as the only players to record 1,500 points, 250 assists, and 250 blocks in a single season.

With averages of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game across 71 appearances, Wembanyama’s debut season stands as a testament to his exceptional talent and potential for future success in the NBA.
