In an attempt to create a more sustainable alternative to petrol, the government introduced CNG into the country. To facilitate its use, the federal government initiated the deployment of CNG-powered vehicles. These vehicles, under The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), are set to roll out nationally on May 29, 2024.

Why It Matters

Petrol scarcity has had damaging effects on Nigeria and its economy. Premium motor spirit is widely used across the nation for cars, engines, and generators, making it in high demand. CNG, as an alternative to petrol, is not only cheaper but also safer to use, constituting a sustainable energy source. With the availability and use of CNG, there will be less reliance on petrol, ensuring a more stable fuel supply.

What They Are Saying

The PCNGI scheme’s director and chief executive, Michael Oluwagbemi, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, that the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s government commitment to boosting sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions. He mentioned a series of activities leading up to the highly anticipated nationwide deployment plan launch on May 29, 2024.

“These activities mark significant milestones in our journey towards achieving energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity for Nigeria. PCNGI is committed to fostering collaboration with all stakeholders as we pave the way for a cleaner, greener future,” Oluwagbemi said.

These programs fulfill President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to drive Nigeria’s energy transition in the transportation sector, leveraging CNG to enable economic growth. “PCNGI is embarking on an extensive pre-launch itinerary aimed at engaging stakeholders, showcasing critical gas supply projects, and facilitating the conversion and refueling infrastructure across the nation.”

FG Mandates CNG Pumps in Filling Stations

This recent development comes amidst the federal government’s requirements for all filling stations to increase Nigerians’ accessibility to CNG by adding a CNG pump in every station. This will facilitate ready access to the fuel and promote its use as an alternative to petrol in the country.

Bottom Line

CNG is a welcomed alternative to petrol for its sustainability and similar beneficial uses. The effectiveness of this new development is still being observed. However, more sensitization and enlightenment need to be provided to Nigerians about this gas and its uses to enable more people to embrace the initiative.
