A 26-year-old security guard, Muhammed Abubakar, hired by a businessman to protect a building in the Ajaka area of Sagamu, allegedly killed an unidentified man who reportedly attempted to steal his phone. According to exclusive information from a police source and a local resident, the victim succumbed to his injuries in a Sagamu hospital around 9 pm on Monday.

A source, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, told PUNCH Metro that a terrifying noise was heard from Abubakar’s post, leading residents to suspect foul play and report the incident to the Sagamu Police Division.

The division quickly responded, sending Inspector Ojo Alasofe to accompany the residents to the scene for investigation.

“We suspected something was wrong when we heard the noise. One resident was sent to the division to report the matter. The residents returned with a police officer. But when they got to the scene, they saw the deceased in the pool of his blood, gasping for breath.

“The security guard was standing right beside him. When he was asked what happened, he said he was using his phone when the deceased suddenly appeared and snatched his phone from him. He said he gave him a hot chase and was nabbed with the help of another security guard, who grabbed the deceased from behind,” the informant said.

It was reported that the security guard was moving the suspect, who is now deceased, to his designated location when a physical altercation occurred.

This confrontation seemed to upset Abubakar, who proceeded to grab a sizable stick and hit the deceased individual on the head. This action caused the deceased man to cry out in pain, leading to blood flowing from his head. Passersby noticed the commotion and contacted the police for assistance.

According to Omolola Odutola, the command spokesperson, Abubakar fled after suspecting that the victim had died in the hospital where he was taken for treatment. The victim was taken to Live Well Hospital in Ajaka, Sagamu, but was declared dead by the attending doctor around 9 p.m. on Monday. His body has been moved to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for identification.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend Abubakar.
