Matchday 36 of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) delivered high drama on Wednesday, June 12, with crucial battles unfolding across nine venues. As the season nears its end, teams are fiercely contesting for top positions and survival.

At the summit, Rangers International of Enugu and Enyimba FC both faltered, allowing Remo Stars to close the gap in a thrilling push for the NPFL crown.

Remo Stars showcased their dominance with a resounding 4-1 victory over Heartland FC at home in Ikenne. Stanley Joseph’s brilliant brace, including a stunning free-kick, spearheaded the triumph. This win not only propelled Remo Stars into second place, leapfrogging Enyimba FC, but also sealed Heartland FC’s fate, confirming their relegation from the NPFL.

In contrast, Enyimba FC stumbled in their pursuit to retain the title, managing only a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa United in Aba. This draw dealt a blow to their ambitions, as they lost crucial ground in the title race.

Rangers International’s title hopes took a hit as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Shooting Stars in Ibadan. The loss dents their lead at the top, allowing their rivals to gain ground. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side struggled to break through a resilient Shooting Stars defense, highlighting the unpredictability of the NPFL as the season draws to a close.

The lower end of the table saw intense action as teams fought to avoid the drop. Abia Warriors secured a vital 3-1 away victory against Gombe United, easing their relegation worries with a performance that showcased their resilience and determination.

In Uyo, Akwa United triumphed 3-1 over Katsina United, further complicating the visitors’ fight against relegation. Akwa United’s victory provided a much-needed boost as they aim to finish the season on a high.

Bendel Insurance edged past Rivers United with a 2-1 win, maintaining their solid form. Kwara United recorded a 2-0 victory over Kano Pillars, while Niger Tornadoes won a thrilling 3-2 encounter against Lobi Stars. Plateau United clinched a 2-1 away win over Sporting Lagos, and Shooting Stars’ solitary goal was enough to see off Rangers International.
