The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority announced on Friday that 55 private and commercial drivers had been sanctioned for operating illegal garages and delaying traffic in the Obalende and Iyana-Oworonsoki districts of the state.

Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, highlighted in a report that the sentence was imposed after the drivers had been warned several times. He also expressed growing concern about the motorists’ actions, which he described as causing unneeded hardship for innocent drivers.

What they’re saying

Taofiq continued,

“This action was led by LASTMA Director of Operations Peter Gbegemede, in accordance with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa.

“Giwa stated that the drivers of these business vehicles, including private automobile owners, were frequently warned by the government before the enforcement activities began.

” The Special Advisor voiced his displeasure with the ugly and disruptive actions of commercial bus drivers, which seriously impede traffic flow for law-abiding drivers.” Taofiq declared that business would carry on throughout the state before and after the Eid-el Kabir celebration, emphasising that LASTMA would ensure that there are no roadblocks throughout the festival.

“The enforcement efforts will continue, with zero tolerance for illegal garages and indiscriminate parking. We will also remove any obstacles to our Lagos highways,” the statement added.

Why this matters

By removing these illegal garages, LASTMA aims to improve traffic flow and reduce commute times for Lagosians.

Uncontrolled parking around garages can create hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Addressing these illegal operations can potentially improve road safety.

Bottom Line

Lagos is cracking down on illegal garages that cause traffic jams. They recently penalized drivers and plan to continue enforcing stricter rules to improve traffic flow and road safety in the city.
