Residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were shocked when Matthew James killed his 55-year-old wife, Etim Mary, over suspicions of infidelity. The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
According to community and police sources, the suspect, now in police custody, killed his wife after suspecting she was having an affair with another man in the community.
An anonymous eyewitness reported that police from the Ijebu-Igbo Division have arrested the suspect.
According to the eyewitness, the suspect believed he and the deceased woman had made a commitment to never betray each other. The suspect thought his wife was being unfaithful, even though she had children from a previous marriage before they got together. The suspect allegedly killed the woman with a machete one morning, but did not try to escape and stayed by her side after.
The state police command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, reported that the wife was declared dead by the attending doctor at the hospital after being brought in by fellow residents following Monday’s tragic event.
“She was found lying in the pool of her blood just in front of the house about 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. She had deep cuts on her forehead, shoulders, and other parts of her body. The husband was found with the blood-soaked machete he was believed to have used to commit the crime.”
“The body was taken to a general hospital in Ijebu-Igbo, where she was certified dead by a doctor on duty. Her corpse has been deposited at the Alayangbe Private Mortuary in Oke-Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo, for the autopsy.”
“We will move the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta as soon as the preliminary investigation is concluded.”
In April, PUNCH Metro covered a case in Ekiti where a man named Dare Onipede reportedly murdered his wife, Arinola, following an argument about her suspected affair. The man supposedly fatally stabbed his wife, who was a mother of three, during the altercation.
