As Kwara State prepares for its forthcoming local government elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. In a recent statement, the PDP called on the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) to conduct a credible and impartial election, stressing the importance of maintaining a level playing field for all parties involved. This appeal follows the reinstatement of the local government system, which had been replaced by Transition Implementation Committee chairmen in 2019. The PDP’s alleges the existence of a potential alliance between KWASIEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

What They Are Saying

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has urged the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) to ensure a credible and impartial local government election. This appeal comes ahead of the upcoming local government elections, which follow the reintroduction of the local government system after it was replaced in 2019 by Transition Implementation Committee chairmen.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, and made available to Punch in Ilorin, the PDP expressed concerns over a suspected alliance between KWASIEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party questioned the APC Chairman, Mr. Sunday Fagbemi action during the meeting which appeared to be a take over of the role of KWASIEC’s Chairman due to him answering questions meant for the public servant. Thus also raised the party concern on the commission’s impartiality.

Why It Matters

The party’s concerns over potential manipulation by the ruling APC highlight the critical nature of electoral integrity for the democratic process in Kwara State.

Moreover, the PDP’s agreement with other political parties on affordable nomination fees aims to ensure broad participation in the election. By advocating for reasonable costs for councilorship and chairmanship nomination forms, the PDP is promoting inclusivity and equal opportunity for all aspirants.

Bottom Line

The PDP has called on KWASIEC to ensure a fair and transparent local government election in Kwara State, emphasizing the need for the commission to operate independently of the ruling APC. The party’s concerns over potential manipulation and its push for affordable nomination fees reflect a broader commitment to maintaining the integrity of the democratic process. The PDP has also urged all stakeholders and the electorate to support free and fair elections, reinforcing the importance of upholding democratic principles in the state.

In response, APC Chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi denied any improper dealings with KWASIEC, emphasizing his right to express views on public matters and accusing opposition parties of attempting to frustrate the election process.
