Why It Matters

The ongoing issues of begging and extortion at airports have drawn numerous complaints from air travelers causing a major concern for Nigeria’s international reputation. Minister Keyamo acknowledged that these unethical practices by a few unscrupulous individuals have contributed to a negative perception of the country. Therefore, he maintains that ensuring a safe and dignified travel experience is crucial for maintaining and improving Nigeria’s global standing.

What They Are Saying

Minister Keyamo shared his concerns and plans in a statement posted on his X handle. He emphasized that while “most” of the officials involved do not fall under his ministry, he is actively coordinating with other ministers and agencies to address the problem. Keyamo stressed the importance of a collaborative approach, noting that the National Security Adviser has recently convened a meeting to develop practical steps to resolve the issue.

In response, some Nigerians expressed their worries about the behavior of airport officials. Others pointed to the poor salaries of the staff as a root cause, suggesting that improving compensation could mitigate many of the problems faced at international airports.

Efforts to eliminate begging and extortion at Nigerian international airports are underway, with Minister Festus Keyamo working closely with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other ministries. This collaborative initiative aims to implement effective solutions to restore the country’s image and ensure a positive experience for air travelers.
