The Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has nominated a new set of chairmen, disregarding the protests that followed the move to replace the previous dismissed appointees.

The chairmen’s appointments has already been confirmed by the House of Assembly.

In May, Soludo dismissed all the caretaker council chairmen, directing them to hand over to the most senior staff of their council areas.

The dismissed chairmen had stayed for a cumulative two years in office, with their tenure was being extended every three months by the governor, who simply wrote to the leadership of the House of Assembly in the state asking for a renewal of their tenure.

The sack sparked controversy among stakeholders in the state, with some expressing optimism that with the dismissal, the governor may begin a process for the conduct of local government elections.

Others had however, insisted that without the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, (ANSIEC), in place yet, there may be no election in sight.

On Thursday, June 20, the House of Assembly confirmed the list of 21 persons sent to them by the governor as new transition committee chairmen and even though it was agreed that the transition committees would manage the administration of the local government areas for three months, it is probable that they may stay well over a year or more through constant reappointment, just as their predecessors had done.
