Nigerian music icon Wizkid granted an exclusive interview to Esquire UK while gearing up for his debut appearance at a Louis Vuitton runway show during Paris Fashion Week.
In an article published on Wednesday by Esquire UK, the Grammy-winning star discussed his forthcoming album and his relationship with Pharrell Williams, the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton.
Wizkid, famous for tracks such as “Essence” and “Ginger,” disclosed that his new album is titled “Morayo” in honor of his mother.
“It’s very important for people to know where the source of my magic comes from. I’m African, I’m Nigerian; that’s my blood, that’s my DNA,” he explained. The album title, ‘Morayo’, is a Yoruba word meaning “I see joy.”
The artist characterized the upcoming album as deeply personal, expressing his hope that it will uplift listeners and spread positive energy.
During a Twitter Q&A session with fans on June 24, 2024, Wizkid confirmed that his upcoming album will feature Nigerian artists.
This announcement is not unexpected, as Wizkid has a history of collaborating with Nigerian musicians. In the lead-up to his sixth album, “Morayo,” he has been spotted in the studio with several Nigerian artists, including Shallipopi, Odumodublvck, and more recently, Omah Lay.
Fans are eager to see which artists will be featured on the album. The anticipation is high, especially since Wizkid has been more active on social media, and there’s significant interest in the musical direction he will take after his controversial statement about distancing himself from Afrobeats.
