What They Are saying

Dangote spokesperson Anthony Chiejina assured the public that the fire was a minor issue confined to the effluent treatment plant, a facility dedicated to treating wastewater. “We have the situation under control,” Chiejina emphasized. “The fire has been contained, and the refinery is operating normally.”

Chiejina further stressed that there were no casualties or injuries reported during the incident. “The safety of our staff is our top priority,” he said. “Thankfully, everyone is safe.”

Why It Matters

The Dangote Refinery, a $20 billion project built by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is expected to become the largest refinery in Africa and Europe upon reaching full capacity. This significant development has the potential to reshape the fuel trade landscape, transforming Nigeria from a fuel importer to a net exporter.

Bottom Line

While gasoline deliveries are currently scheduled for July, the refinery has already begun production and is a major step forward for Nigeria’s energy sector.
