In a display of political showmanship, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima assured Nigerians on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu is dead set on addressing the nation’s relentless security problems. This declaration was made during a high-profile condolence visit in Kano following the passing of his mother-in-law, Hajiya Maryam Albishir.

While accepting the sympathies of the presidential delegation, Shettima lauded Tinubu’s so-called “genuine leadership,” insisting that the President’s intentions for the country are sincere. “No matter how long the night is, it must give way to the light of dawn,” Shettima proclaimed, as if Nigerians hadn’t heard that one before. He added, “We are facing security challenges across this country, but the President is determined to redefine modern leadership and tackle the insecurity plaguing our nation.”

In a heartfelt plea, Shettima urged Nigerians to unite behind Tinubu’s vision, emphasizing that this is no time for finger-pointing but for collective effort. “If Nigeria works, Africa works,” he declared, in a sweeping statement that’s sure to raise a few eyebrows.

Expressing his gratitude to Kano State for their hospitality, Shettima noted, “Everyone that has come here is welcomed by the Governor. We have gone beyond politics. We are now in the phase of governance and what binds us together triumphs over whatever divides us.” A noble sentiment, but one that many might see as glossing over the deep-seated divisions and issues still present.

Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila delivered President Tinubu’s condolence message, expressing the President’s sorrow and offering prayers for Shettima’s family. “The President sends his best wishes, his prayers, his thoughts to you and your wife and the entire family of the deceased,” Gbajabiamila stated, ensuring that the spotlight remained firmly on the administration’s supposed empathy.

In what was undoubtedly a politically charged visit, Shettima’s statements served as both a reassurance and a reminder of the significant hurdles still facing the Tinubu administration in their quest to secure the nation.
