At least once in your lifetime, you’ve probably tried out a red candy or sipped on a bright red drink. What if I told you that some of that red color might actually come from bugs? Shocker, right? Some food coloring are actually made from bugs. One of the most common red dyes, called carmine, is made from cochineal insects. It may sound weird, but people have been using it for a really long time to get that perfect red shade.

Not only are insects used to make food coloring but other products like whole foods, and insect based flour. All you need to know about insect derived food is captured in one of our articles. But in this article, we’re going to learn about cochineal insects and their role in the production of food coloring.

The Cochineal Bug

The cochineal bug is a tiny insect that belongs to the scale insect family. They mainly live in Central and South America on cacti, especially the prickly pear cactus. The dye, known as carmine, is extracted from dried and crushed female cochineal bugs. The dye comes from female cochineal bugs because they have a lot more of the red pigment called carminic acid. Thus it’s easier and more efficient to use them to make the dye which is used in many foods and drinks.

A cool fact is that the Aztecs and Mayans used cochineal dye a long time ago. The Aztecs and Mayans were ancient civilizations in Mexico and Central America. They used carmine dye, made from cochineal bugs, to color their textiles and artworks.

How is Carmine Turned From Bugs to Food Coloring?

The dye is made by drying and crushing the female bugs, which contain a chemical called carminic acid that makes the dye red. After the bugs are collected, they go through a process where they’re dried, crushed, and boiled in water to extract the red dye. This extract is then filtered and treated to concentrate the dye. Finally, it’s often mixed with other ingredients to create different shades and used in foods like candy and drinks, as well as cosmetics like lipstick and blush.

Although carmine undergoes a thorough processing, some people can still be allergic to it. Allergies happen when the immune system reacts to proteins in the dye, causing symptoms like itching, hives, or even more serious reactions in rare cases. Because of potential allergies, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States requires carmine to be clearly listed on ingredient labels. This helps people with allergies avoid products containing carmine and stay safe.

Potential Questions About Carmine

Is carmine vegan?
No, carmine isn’t considered vegan because it’s made from insects called cochineal bugs. Vegans avoid animal products, so they might choose to avoid foods with carmine.

Are there any alternatives to carmine dye?
Yes, there are other red dyes that aren’t made from insects. Some are synthetic, meaning they’re made in labs, and scientists are working on making carminic acid in labs too, which is the red pigment in carmine.

How can I tell if a food contains carmine?
To know if a food has carmine in it, just check the ingredient list on the package. Look for “carmine” or “cochineal extract.” The FDA makes sure these names are listed so people can see if it’s in the food they want to eat.

Conclusion

Carmine, made from cochineal bugs, is a red dye used in foods and cosmetics. It’s not vegan because it comes from insects, which might be a concern for some people. While it’s generally safe to eat because it’s processed and doesn’t contain insect parts, some individuals could be allergic to it.

If you’re checking food labels and see “carmine” or “cochineal extract,” you’ll know it’s in there. For those with allergies or who prefer to avoid insect-based products, there are synthetic alternatives
being used and researched.
