Amidst the ongoing financial and economic crisis in Nigeria, rumors have circulated that the House of Assembly has approved the purchase of a new presidential jet. However, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has clarified these rumors, stating they are false and intended to destabilize the parliament.

What They Are Saying

During a plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio addressed these rumors, supporting the observations made by Senate Leader Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele. He firmly denied any approval for the purchase of a new presidential aircraft.

“We have never approved the purchase of a presidential jet. There is no such request before us now. It is mere anticipatory blackmail,” Akpabio stated.

Addressing the Speculations

Speculations had suggested that the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence had urged the Federal Government to purchase new airplanes for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima. The committee was alleged to have made this recommendation after a report from its technical subcommittee assessed the status and airworthiness of the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF).

“The Committee is of the strong and informed opinion that considering the fragile structure of the Nigerian federation and recognizing the dire consequences of any foreseen or unforeseen mishap that may arise as a result of technical/operational inadequacy of the Presidential Air Fleet, it is in the best interest of the country to procure two additional aircraft as recommended,” the purported report said.

Clarification from the Senate President

Addressing journalists in Maiduguri, Akpabio described these claims as false. He emphasized that the Senate has not made any such approval and accused propagandists and fifth columnists of spreading misinformation.

“I want to dispel the rumor that you are hearing that the Senate President said he will buy a new plane for the President and his Vice, irrespective of the fact that Nigerians are hungry or whatever,” Akpabio stated.

“I never said that. I was actually in Zanzibar, Tanzania. It is the handiwork of propagandists and fifth columnists, who never see anything good in what we are doing. Be rest assured, pray for the government, have patience, and be assured that the combination of Tinubu and Shettima will bring wealth and prosperity to all.”

Why It Matters

The spread of false information can undermine public trust and destabilize governmental operations, especially during times of economic crisis. Clarifying these rumors is essential to maintain stability and ensure the public remains informed with accurate information.

Bottom Line

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly denied the approval of a new presidential jet purchase, labeling the rumors as false and harmful propaganda. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the government, assuring them that the administration is committed to bringing prosperity to the nation.
