In a bold move to address the economic hardships and food security challenges facing Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has authorized a significant nationwide initiative which he announced during the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. This plan involves the purchasing and distribution of foodstuffs worth ₦155 billion across the country.

Additionally, the President has approved a series of measures aimed at boosting food production and providing financial relief to struggling families. This comprehensive approach is designed to not only alleviate immediate needs but also to lay the groundwork for sustainable agricultural development and economic growth. President Tinubu calls for the collaboration of state government in addressing citizen’s needs.

Presidential Support

According to a statement by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu expressed his commitment to providing the necessary support to ease the hardships experienced by Nigerians.

“President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate rollout of the National Construction and Household Support Programme to cover all geo-political zones in the country,” the statement read.

The program includes the allocation of ₦155 billion for the purchase and sale of assorted foodstuffs to be distributed across the nation. Additionally, Tinubu approved a ₦50,000 uplift grant for 100,000 families per state, to be provided over three months.

Boosting Food Production

President Tinubu emphasized the urgency of enhancing food production, highlighting the significance of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway. This route is crucial as it connects the food-producing regions and serves as a major artery for food export.

“Our states must work together to deliver on the critical reforms required of us to meet the needs of our people. Time is humanity’s most precious asset. You can never have enough of it. It is getting late,” he emphasized.

Commitment to Agricultural Development

Tinubu assured governors of his readiness to support agricultural mechanization and the provision of high-quality seedlings. He also promised solar-powered irrigation facilities to aid farmers throughout the year.

“We are ready and able to support you in the form of the mechanization of your agricultural processes and the provision of high-quality seedlings. We are prepared to provide solar-powered irrigation facilities to support our farmers across seasons, but we must now produce. We must produce the food our people eat, and it will require coordination and intentionality between members of the National Economic Council (NEC),” Tinubu stated.

He also emphasized the importance of domestic food production, job creation, and wealth generation through food export. He called for immediate action and coordination among NEC members to achieve these goals.“There is nothing we are doing that is more important than producing high-quality food for our people to consume, buy, and sell. We create jobs in the production of it. And that is before we generate wealth by exporting the excess. It is not beyond us to achieve this for Nigerians.”

Bottom Line

President Tinubu’s directive aims to address immediate food security concerns and foster long-term agricultural productivity. By distributing essential food items and providing financial support to families, the government seeks to alleviate economic pressures. Moreover, the focus on boosting food production and export potential is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth, ensuring a more resilient and self-sufficient Nigeria.
