French Interior Ministry Boosts Security for LGBTQIA+ Events Ahead of Tense Elections

The French interior ministry has issued a call for heightened security measures around LGBTQIA+ events as the nation approaches crucial elections, including the highly anticipated Paris Pride march

In a letter to police and local authorities sent on Friday, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin highlighted the need for reinforcement due to the rising number of discriminatory acts targeting the LGBTQIA+ community.

The annual Paris Pride march is a significant event for the LGBTQIA+ community, symbolizing the reinforcement of their rights and support for the gay movement. This year’s march holds particular importance due to the heightened discriminatory actions against the community as France approaches the first round of the snap parliamentary election slated to be held on Sunday, which could potentially bring the far-right to power.

Inter-LGBT and other rights groups have urged people to march in large numbers on Saturday to oppose far-right ideologies and safeguard LGBTQIA+ rights.

James Leperlier, president of Inter-LGBT, expressed concern over the rise in hate fueled by the far-right National Rally (RN) party’s recent electoral success. Despite the RN’s claims of having no ties to violent far-right groups, the party has consistently voted against legislation supporting LGBTQIA+ rights.

To ensure safety, the Paris Pride organizers have doubled the number of volunteers handling security.

Bottom Line:

The call for enhanced security at LGBTQIA+ events reflects the growing tension and discriminatory actions as France faces a critical election, highlighting the ongoing struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights and the threat posed by far-right ideologies.
