Residential areas and major roads across Lagos State have been inundated following days of heavy rainfall. The prolonged rain on Wednesday, July 3rd, led to severe flooding in multiple parts of the city, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ketu, Oworonshoki, Oshodi, Epe, Sangotedo, and Awoyaya. Residents have attributed the flooding to blocked waterways caused by indiscriminate waste dumping.

One resident reported that excessive water flow has completely submerged his home, making it uninhabitable due to a lack of drainage in the new development site. Another resident expressed frustration with the recurring flooding on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, blaming it on obstructed drains.

He urged the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to clear the drains and called on residents to stop dumping waste into the drainage systems to mitigate flooding. Additionally, he requested the Lagos State Government to expedite road repairs in Sangotedo.

In the Okota area, many residents spent the morning removing water from their flooded apartments. Motorists faced significant delays on the road from Alapere to the Third Mainland Bridge, with the Iyana-Oworo-Olopomeji area experiencing severe flooding and heavy traffic extending to Alapere.

The downpour also caused a tree to fall around the Airport U-turn in Oshodi, where personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) were deployed to clear the fallen tree and ensure traffic flow and public safety.

The flood has even affected people going to work using public transport as it is very hard to see buses or bikes under this heavy rain and along the flooded roads.
