In a dramatic Copa América quarter-final, ten-man Uruguay defied the odds to edge out Brazil 4-2 on penalties, securing their first semi-final berth in 13 years. The Sin City crowd at Allegiant Stadium witnessed a pulsating clash as Uruguay held firm against the tournament favorites, setting up a thrilling showdown with Colombia.

The match began with intense anticipation, as both South American giants vied for a spot in the semi-finals. Despite Darwin Núñez’s near-miss header early on, it was Brazil who threatened first. Raphinha’s powerful strike forced a stellar save from Uruguay’s goalkeeper, Sergio Rochet, who was instrumental in keeping his team level through the first half. Another crucial save from Rochet just before the break ensured a scoreless stalemate as the teams headed into the interval.

The second half saw Uruguay pressing forward, with Federico Valverde testing Brazil’s resolve with a long-range effort. However, the game took a pivotal turn with 30 minutes left when Nahitan Nández was initially booked for a challenge on Rodrygo. A VAR review upgraded his yellow card to red, leaving Uruguay with ten men and a daunting task to fend off Brazil’s relentless attacks.

Despite being a man down, Uruguay’s defense stood resolute, and Brazil failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage. With no goals after 90 minutes, the game was decided by a penalty shootout for the third time in the last four Copa América quarter-finals.

Uruguay’s past penalty heartbreaks seemed to haunt them, but Brazil’s Éder Militão missed the first spot-kick, giving Uruguay the edge. The Celeste converted their first three penalties, and after Douglas Luiz struck the post, Manuel Ugarte calmly sealed the victory with the decisive fourth penalty. Uruguay’s victory not only ends Brazil’s semi-final streak but also propels them closer to a record 16th Copa América title. Their next challenge awaits against a formidable Colombian side in the semi-finals.
