President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has stepped down as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government. The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority, currently underway at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marks the culmination of President Tinubu’s tenure as chairman.

President Tinubu’s leadership at the helm of ECOWAS has been marked by significant milestones, including the imposition of sanctions on Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea. However, in a demonstration of the sub-regional body’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, the sanctions were subsequently lifted.

During his tenure, President Tinubu worked tirelessly to promote regional integration, peace, and stability in West Africa. His leadership and diplomatic efforts have been widely acknowledged, and his contributions to the region’s development have been significant.

As President Tinubu hands over the reins to a new leader, the region looks forward to continued progress and cooperation under the new chairman’s leadership. The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority is expected to address pressing regional issues and chart a course for the future of ECOWAS.

President Tinubu’s tenure as ECOWAS chairman may have come to an end, but his legacy in the region is sure to endure. His commitment to regional integration, peace, and stability has left an indelible mark on the region, and his contributions will continue to inspire future generations of leaders.

In a statement, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the member states of ECOWAS for their support during his tenure and reiterated his commitment to the region’s continued progress. “I am honored to have served as the chairman of ECOWAS, and I am proud of the progress we have made together. I have no doubt that the region will continue to thrive under the leadership of my successor,” he said.

The new chairman of ECOWAS is expected to be announced shortly, and the region looks forward to continued cooperation and progress under their leadership.
