175 students have been expelled from Kwara State University in Malete, the Moro local government area of the state, for a variety of offences against the policies and procedures of the university.

This was stated in a press release that Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, Ag Director of University Relations, provided to Ilorin-based journalists.

What they’re saying

The statement reads: “This is to inform the public that the following one hundred and seventy-five students have been expelled from Kwara State University, Malete, for various offences.

It further stated that “the approval of the expulsion followed the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC), which met between October 2021 and March 2024.

“The announcement further noted that the expelled students were penalised for offences ranging from examination malpractice, theft, using fake results to gain admission, assault, fraud, belonging to unregistered associations, and possession of firearms.”

“Kwara State University’s management wishes to reiterate that it will tolerate no acts of indiscipline at all. The university is committed to producing graduates who are exceptional in both character and academics.”

Why this matters

The university is sending a strong message that they will not tolerate cheating or using fake documents to gain admission. This ensures a fair learning environment for all students.

Expelling students involved in assault, theft, or possession of firearms promotes a safer campus environment.

Final Thoughts

Expelling is a harsh penalty, and depending on the offense, some might argue for alternative punishments like suspension or community service.

The statement mentions a Students’ Disciplinary Committee, but it would be good to know if the expelled students were given fair hearings.
