Yacoob Alebiosu, the Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, is optimistic that the collaboration with the Netherlands will improve Los Angeles’ coastal zone management.

Over the weekend, Alebiosu hosted a delegation from the Netherlands, headed by Consular-General Michel Deelen. It was an extension of the conversation on possible cooperation in the management of Lagos’ shoreline.

The gathering looked at ways to work together on sustainable development, coastal conservation, and water management. Community erosion is a problem in Lagos.

During a prior visit, the commissioner stated that the state is actively attempting to address these issues by introducing innovative and reasonably priced technology in other nations, some of which are in Africa.

The commissioner acknowledged that mitigating measures are necessary even though erosion is a natural phenomenon and highlighted efforts to support communities near the coastline. Even though it will cost money, he believes that protecting and reclaiming these villages should come first.

Bottom Line

While the focus on broad areas like water management is good, it would be interesting to see what specific solutions this collaboration might explore.

The details on how coastal communities will be involved in the planning and implementation of solutions remain unclear.
