The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) together with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and other Allied Institutions (NASU) have staged a protest on Tuesday over the Federal Government’s decision to withhold their salaries for the past four months.

Comrade Alasan Abdullahi, the NASU Chairman at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), had made this disclosure during the protest at the university.

Abdullahi had also expressed dismay at the Federal Government’s decision to pay four months’ withheld salaries to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) only, neglecting other members of the association in the same vein.

What They’re Saying

In a flurry of anger, Abdullahi had lamented the situation,
“We are protesting to show our concern over the Federal Government’s selective payment to ASUU, leaving out other union members,” he said. “Are we not all university staff?”

The NASU chairman also added that if the Government failed to respond to their demands, the unions will proceed with a warning strike.

A meeting between the educational unions and the Federal Ministry of Education on Thursday had ended with no clear commitment to paying the withheld salaries or resolving other pending issues.

As a result of this, the union leadership instructed chapters across various universities nationwide to begin sensitization activities as from Monday, July 8, and a campus protest to begin on Tuesday, July 9.

More details to come later…
