Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday the Trump administration will not interfere with a Department of Justice investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., but warned that immigration fraud will be prosecuted if uncovered, following a predawn raid on her Washington, D.C., home.
“We don’t want to be like the Biden administration. We never want to be like that — where they would allow the law to go after their political opponents,” Vance told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview. “We really want to let the law, the facts drive this. And if justice requires something else be done, then, of course, we’ll take a step when we have to.”
The Raid
Omar’s Washington, D.C., home was subject to a predawn raid Monday conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the principal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, as first reported by Fox News Digital.
An investigation into potential immigration fraud related to a sitting member of Congress is unprecedented. Vance acknowledged the novelty but said authorities will go where the facts take them. “I don’t think you can say because politics might be difficult or politics might be easy, you can’t follow the law. You have to actually enforce the law as it exists,” he said.
The Vance Criticism
The vice president also criticized Omar personally, saying she harbors “disdain” and “rage” toward the country that gave her family refuge after fleeing civil war in Somalia in 1991.

“What I’d say is that Ilhan Omar herself is a very unprecedented person,” Vance said. “We have very rarely had a person in Congress who seems to have such disdain and such rage at the country that gave her a better life. Now, that’s not a crime. But we’re going to see whether she did commit a crime. And if she did, we’re obviously going to follow the law.”
Omar’s Response
Omar responded to the raid on social media, writing on her personal X account: “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”
In a post from her official government account, she added: “This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies.”
The Political Context
Vance made the comments after rallying on behalf of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, about 100 miles east of Dallas. Paxton is running in a neck-and-neck race with Democratic state Representative James Talarico just three weeks before Election Day, as Republicans fight to hold control of Congress.
The Bottom Line
DHS raided Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington home on Monday in an unprecedented immigration fraud investigation involving a sitting member of Congress. Vice President JD Vance said the administration will not interfere with the DOJ’s investigation but warned that the law will be enforced if wrongdoing is found. Omar called the raid an “abuse of power” and an attempt to intimidate political enemies. The raid comes three weeks before the midterm elections.
My Opinion
The raid on Ilhan Omar’s home is unprecedented. In the history of the United States, federal agents have not conducted predawn raids on the homes of sitting members of Congress over immigration fraud allegations. There is no playbook for this. There is no precedent. There is only the question of why now.
Vance says he wants the facts and the law to drive the investigation. That is the right thing to say. But the timing is hard to ignore. Three weeks before an election. A Republican administration. A Democratic congresswoman who has been a target of Trump’s rhetoric for a decade. If the Justice Department has evidence of fraud, it should present it. If it does not, this looks like exactly what Omar says it is: political intimidation dressed up as law enforcement.
Vance’s personal attack on Omar was telling. He said she has “disdain” and “rage” toward the country that gave her a better life. That is not a legal argument. It is a character assassination. And it reveals what this is really about. The investigation may be legitimate. But the vice president is not talking about the facts. He is talking about how much he dislikes her. That should concern everyone, Republican and Democrat alike. Because if the government can raid your home based on who you are and what you believe, no one is safe.
