On Friday, amidst pomp and pageantry, Prince Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin was officially crowned the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. This momentous occasion witnessed the gathering of Nigeria’s elite, including presidents, governors, and traditional rulers, who came to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan and witness a new chapter unfold.
The coronation ceremony marked the culmination of a process following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, earlier this year. Governor Seyi Makinde, present at the event, praised the ascension of Oba Olakulehin as a testament to Ibadan’s enduring spirit. He emphasized the importance of this occasion in uniting the city, putting an end to any lingering divisions.
“This has again demonstrated that Ibadanland and the people of Ibadan can be resilient. Those who have been focusing on the things that divide us have now been put to shame. I want to greet the Kabiyesi and pray that God will grant you long life to reign for a long time on the throne.”
Tradition Takes Center Stage
Both President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by Power Minister Bayo Adelabu, and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State commended Governor Makinde for upholding the traditional selection process. This ceremony, they declared, serves as an example for other kingdoms in maintaining peaceful transitions of power.
The event transcended the coronation itself, becoming a celebration of Ibadan’s vibrant cultural heritage. The Secretary to the State Government, Olanike Adeyemo, highlighted this aspect in her welcome address, applauding Governor Makinde’s commitment to preserving such cultural treasures.
A New Era Dawns
The coronation ceremony wasn’t just a celebration of the past; it also heralded a new era for Ibadan. Governor Abiodun of Ogun state referred to it as “the beginning of a new era,” signifying the city’s potential for continued growth and development under Oba Olakulehin’s leadership.
In his acceptance speech, the newly crowned Oba expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Governor Makinde and all those present for their unwavering support.
A Gathering of Dignitaries
The ceremony was a star-studded affair, attracting prominent figures like the Sultan of Sokoto, the Ooni of Ife, and former governors. Their presence underscored the significance of this event and the respect held for the Olubadan stool.
The coronation of Oba Olakulehin marks a significant milestone for Ibadan. This event showcased the city’s rich cultural heritage, its commitment to tradition, and its capacity for unity. With a new leader at the helm, Ibadan looks poised for a bright future.
