Nepal: Death Toll in Landslide Bus Accident Hits 60

The search for survivors are still on after two buses swept off a key highway into the Trishuli River in Nepal.

The accident had occurred in the wee hours of Friday.

Little can be said about 60 passengers of the buses who are said to be missing but three others who swam to safety are on hospital admission.

Police sources have reported how the accident happened, saying that the buses had been traveling on a highway linking the capital city, Kathmandu, to southern parts of Nepal when they were carried away near Simaltal, about 120 kilometres west of the capital.

By Friday afternoon, the search efforts of the military and police have yet to yield any results, with the buses still reported missing.

According to local reports, the downpours seen in the past few days around that region of Nepal have swollen the waterways with dirty brown water, making it hard for the rescuers to see their way around the area.

To further exacerbate the situation, reports surfaced later on Friday of a third bus getting hit by a landslide, a short distance away on the same ill-fated highway.

At the time of filing this report, the driver of the third bus had been confirmed dead but not much else is reported about that particular bus.

What They’re Saying

Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has expressed sorrow over these tragic incidents, revealing how worried he had been over the recent floods and landslides occurring in many parts of the country.

About 100 people have been killed since mid June in Nepal as heavy rains have cause floods and landslides in the country populated with 31 million people.
