During a plenary session on Thursday, the resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion of public importance. Titled “An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at all Levels in Order to Address their Issues,” the motion was sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State. Isiaka urged the protest leaders to reconsider their plans and opt for patience and dialogue with the government.
Call for Understanding
Members of the House emphasized that the economic downturn is a global issue, not unique to Nigeria. They appealed to the public to recognize the government’s efforts to implement reforms. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu supported the motion, noting that one year is insufficient for the government to resolve the country’s challenges, and he called for patience with the Tinubu administration.
Salary Sacrifice for the Public Good
Kalu disclosed that House members earn N600,000 monthly and would be sacrificing half of this amount for six months to demonstrate their commitment to the public.
