The Katsina State Hisbah Board claims to have burned N60 million worth of seized alcohol and other illicit narcotics in the state’s Funtua Local Government Area (LGA).

Dr Aminu Usman, the state’s Hisbah Commander, stated this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina on Sunday.

According to Umsan, 1,750 crates of alcohol and around 33 jerry cans of locally manufactured beer were recently confiscated and destroyed in Funtua.

The Hisbah commander went on to say that the endeavour was a component of their duty to uphold moral standards throughout the state. Although he praised the board officials’ efforts, he asked them to double down on carrying out their responsibilities.

In addition, he asked the state’s religious authorities for assistance in making the board successful, arguing that Hisbah is not affiliated with any specific organisation or sect.

The Hisbah commander expressed gratitude to Governor Dikko Radda for providing the board with unwavering support in carrying out its duties.

Usman urged the public to constantly provide the board with accurate information about locations where unethical activity has been observed. He urged community leaders, educators, and parents to step up their efforts to inculcate morality and discipline in young people living in their neighbourhoods.

Final Thoughts

For many in Katsina, Hisbah’s actions are seen as a necessary measure to uphold Islamic values. This enforcement reflects the societal norms and expectations of the region, where alcohol and certain narcotics are prohibited under Sharia law.

The enforcement methods and penalties imposed by Hisbah have been subjects of legal and human rights debates. Such actions could infringe on individual freedoms and rights, especially in a diverse country like Nigeria where religious and cultural practices vary widely.
