At the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) General Council (GC), the African Group made a motion to re-elect Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the organization’s director-general.

This was said in an Abuja statement by Adebayo Thomas, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment.

He claims that the suggestion is for members to think about Okonjo-Iweala running for the position of chief executive officer of the organisation once more.

According to him, the suggestion also aimed to facilitate the General Council (GC) Chair’s ability to start the director-general recruitment process as soon as feasible.

At the GC, he cited Amb. Abdulhamid Adamu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, who stated that there was discussion among the members over the matter.

What they’re saying

“And all members emphasised Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts and qualities, as well as her contributions to the organisation, which aided significant advancement and development.

“They all agreed that she deserved to be reappointed as director-general.”

“All the members in the meeting from all regions that took the floor almost 58 members supported the proposal,” according to him. He noted that members resolved that the General Council Chair begin consultations on the appointment process as soon as possible, as approved by council.

Bottom Line

The support from members in many locations reflects an agreement on her performance and the success gained under her leadership.

This degree of support is important for ensuring the WTO’s leadership remains stable and consistent, particularly during times of geopolitical and economic instability.

Okonjo-Iweala responded by thanking all members and promising to react as soon as possible with her acceptance following consultation with family members
