Israeli tanks rolled deeper into Gaza’s southern regions on Sunday, intensifying the brutal clashes with Hamas militants. Gaza health officials reported that Israeli military strikes claimed 66 Palestinian lives across the enclave in just 24 hours

Why It Matters

The tanks advanced further into the towns of Al-Karara, Al-Zanna, and Bani Suhaila, located in the east of Khan Younis. Medics confirmed that at least nine Palestinians were killed earlier on Sunday by these strikes.

Fierce battles echoed through the eastern areas of Khan Younis, forcing thousands of families to flee to overcrowded zones in Al-Mawasi and Deir Al-Balah. Later that day, two separate Israeli airstrikes in Khan Younis killed at least 15 Palestinians, including a tragic strike on a tent area in Al-Mawasi that claimed five lives, among them a four-month-old girl, Maria Abu Ziada. Al-Mawasi, ironically designated as a humanitarian area, has become a desperate refuge for those ordered to evacuate by the Israeli army.

What They Are saying

The Israeli military stated it was confirming these reports. Another airstrike hit a house in central Khan Younis, killing 10 people, according to health officials. Israel justified the raid in eastern Khan Younis as a response to renewed attacks, including rocket fire, aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping. They claimed to have killed dozens of militants and dismantled military infrastructure.

In Rafah, near the Egyptian border, Israeli forces pushed further into the northern parts of the city, still not fully under their control. Tanks also targeted areas in the central Gaza Strip, including Bureij camp, Nuseirat camp, and Juhr El-Deek village. In the Tel Al-Hawa suburb of Gaza City, an Israeli airstrike killed four Palestinians amid intense fighting between Hamas fighters and Israeli forces.

Meanwhile, CIA Director William Burns was set to meet with Israeli, Egyptian, and Qatari officials in Rome to discuss a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. While Hamas seeks a ceasefire to end the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists the conflict will continue until Hamas is defeated. Israeli broadcaster Kan reported that Israel’s response to the latest ceasefire proposal was delivered to Washington on Saturday.

Adding to the tension, Israel threatened a harsh retaliation against Hezbollah after accusing the Iran-backed group of killing 12 children and teenagers in a rocket attack on a football field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. This attack has heightened fears of a broader conflict between the heavily armed adversaries.

Gaza’s local health authorities report over 39,000 Palestinians killed in the Israeli offensive, a figure that doesn’t distinguish between fighters and non-combatants. Israel, having lost 328 soldiers in Gaza combat, estimates that fighters make up about a third of the Palestinian casualties since the offensive began. The conflict traces back to a Hamas-led attack in southern Israel on October 7, which left around 1,200 people dead and 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli figures.

Bottom Line

This grim description is so sad and makes you wonder, why can’t we live in peace and love each other? Why must the world always be at war?
