Italian club, Chievo Verona, will stop existing after failing to meet up with yesterday deadline of finding a new buyer for the club.

The Italian board found different financial irregularities within the club and issued punishment to the club by sending it down the pecking order from Serie B to Serie D to gain promotion back up to top flight league. Since the club could not attract a new buyer to invest in the club, they will now cease to exist.

Former club legend and captain, Sergio Pellissier, made the announcement via his Instagram account.

In his words:

“Unfortunately, today the story of this club that gave me so much has come to a close. It’s one of the saddest days of my life. I tried with all my strength, and I really hoped to start again with a new club and continue this fantastic story, it would’ve been marvellous. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it done.

“I thought there were more people ready to step up and safeguard football in this city and this region, but that was not the case.

“We tried. I am just sad that we had so little time during a complicated period to find sponsors. So, goodbye my beloved Chievo, you will always be the most important club in my life.”

The club which was founded in 1929 in the city of Verona, and popularly known as the Flying Donkey, at their highest point finished fifth in their debut season, having led the league for six successive weeks at one stage.

They also had two European appearances and made it to the Champions League playoffs in 2006. They were relegated in 2019, and have struggled to cope with the financial difficulties ever since.
