You’ve probably caught wind of this news yes, the Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano has been looted by hoodlums amid nationwide protests against economic hardship. The facility, set to be commissioned next week, didn’t just get ransacked; it was set ablaze.

Why It Matters

Since Thursday, protests have intensified across the state. The police, in their typical fashion, have been dispersing crowds with teargas. In Kano, the situation escalated quickly. Not only was the NCC Industrial Park targeted, but the Audu Bako Secretariat and state high courts also faced looting and arson. Even supermarkets and mosques weren’t spared from the rioters’ wrath.

Eyewitnesses reported absolute mayhem at the ICT centre. Protesters made off with desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other valuables before torching the place. The scene was a sad reminder of how quickly order can dissolve into chaos.

What They Are saying

In a swift response, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf slapped a 24-hour curfew across the state. “We are deeply concerned by the turn of events and are taking all necessary measures to restore order. I urge all residents to remain indoors as security agencies work to enforce the curfew,” Governor Yusuf stated.

The Kano State Police Command wasted no time in cracking down. According to police spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa’s Facebook update, several arrests have been made, and stolen items have been recovered. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrators of these criminal acts to justice. The safety and security of our citizens and property remain our top priority,” Kiyawa declared.

What started as a peaceful demonstration against worsening economic conditions has turned into violent confrontations with security forces. The government, trying to put out the fire, is calling for calm and urging the youth to channel their grievances through peaceful means.

Bottom Line

Let’s not deceive ourselves, was anyone surprised the protest got hijacked by hoodlums? A protest meant to be peaceful now cloaked in fear. Looting an ICT centre, really? How does that solve anything? Priorities seem amiss, as always. So, how’s it going on your side as the unrest rages on?
