In their statement, the embassy emphasized that Russia maintains a strict non-interference policy regarding the domestic affairs of other nations, Nigeria included. “The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way,” the statement read, in a tone that almost seemed to say, “Please, leave us out of this.”

The nationwide protest, started on Thursday, August 1, stems from widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of economic hardship. On Monday, police announced the arrest of the supplier of these Russian flags along with 30 protesters. This move only added to the growing tension and speculation about foreign influence in domestic issues.

The embassy’s statement clarified that the protesters’ use of Russian symbols is purely a personal choice and does not reflect any official stance or policy of the Russian government. “These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals, and they do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in the issue,” the embassy stated, trying to distance itself from the unfolding drama.

The Russian Embassy acknowledged the legitimacy of peaceful demonstrations. “We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with the Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy,” the statement noted. However, the embassy didn’t hold back in condemning any potential violence, a sentiment that seemed almost perfunctory.

“Should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence, we strictly condemn them,” it added, making it clear that Russia wants no part in any chaos.

In short, the Russian Embassy made it very clear that they have nothing to do with the Nigerian protests. They also don’t like that people are waving Russian flags during these events. As the protests go on, all eyes are on the demonstrators and the government, while Russia stays out of it.
