The title alone, “With Difficulty Comes Ease,” produced by Nemsia Studios, immediately struck a chord with me. It’s a phrase that seems to wrap itself around your heart, offering comfort even before the movie begins. But let me tell you, this film is not your usual dose of entertainment. It’s a beautiful piece of work that stands apart from the everyday movies we’re so used to.

A Journey of Resilience

The movie follows the story of Zainab, played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh, a young widow facing alot of challenges. As she struggles with the pain of losing her husband, Qasim, she is forced to go through the tricky waters of grief, tradition, and the pressures of starting over. Directed by Korede Azeez, the film opens with a heart-wrenching scene that sets the tone for Zainab’s journey. Her mother-in-law insists she stay home for four months to mourn her husband, but how can Zainab sit still when her shop rent is due, her husband’s goods are missing , and she’s living with a woman who isn’t exactly welcoming?

Life’s Harsh Realities

I was captivated by how the movie began, it felt like a reminder that life happens, whether we’re ready or not, and sometimes, we just have to push through. Zainab’s struggles are vividly portrayed, from dealing with the National Population Commission to register her husband’s death to trying to access their savings. The bureaucratic hurdles she faces are exhausting, and discovering her husband’s business is in shambles adds to her burdens. Living under the same roof as a disapproving mother-in-law only makes things tougher. Yet, Zainab’s perseverance shines through as she tackles these challenges with grace and determination. Even when the tears come, there’s a defiance in her eyes that speaks volumes.

A mix of Emotions

As if Zainab didn’t have enough on her plate, her husband’s debtor makes an appearance, adding another difficulty to her already complicated life. I found myself wondering how she could possibly survive all these setbacks. It felt overwhelming, but Zainab’s resilience was inspiring. Here is a woman who has suffered multiple miscarriages, now desperately trying to protect her pregnancy, discovered only after her husband’s death. The way she handles each situation, with quiet strength, is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to endure.

An Unconventional Masterpiece

The film features a remarkable cast, including Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Ummi Baba-Ahmed, Caleb Richard, Ibrahim Daddy, Habiba Tanko, and Gloria Johnson. However, don’t expect the usual mix of humor, action, or drama. This is not your traditional kind of entertainment. It’s a story that feels like you’re peering into someone’s life, with all its raw, unfiltered emotions. The creators have focused on storytelling that is thoughtful, reflective, and different from the norm.

The movie moves at a slower pace, allowing you to absorb every detail. If you lack patience, you might find it boring, but for those who appreciate depth, it’s a film to savour.

Exploring Deep Themes

One of the most intriguing aspects of the movie is its exploration of themes like religion. It raises thought-provoking questions, Does your love for someone change if they convert to another religion? Can you harbor resentment against someone simply because they don’t share your beliefs? These are weighty issues that the film handles with care, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own values.

A Beautiful, Yet Unconventional Experience

While I wouldn’t call this movie purely entertaining in the traditional sense, it is undeniably beautiful. It’s the kind of film that makes you think, that lingers in your mind long after it ends. I found myself relating to many of the struggles depicted. Life, at its lowest points, can feel overwhelming, throwing challenge after challenge at you. But there’s a quiet beauty in the way Zainab faces her battles.

Stellar Performances

The acting in this movie is exceptional. Uzoamaka Aniunoh, known for her standout role in the “MTV Shuga” series, delivers a powerful performance as Zainab. She brings to life a character who is both resilient and determined, fighting against the odds with a quiet strength.

The supporting cast, including Ummi Baba-Ahmed as the stern mother-in-law, Caleb Richards as Rayyan, Ibrahim Daddy as Umar, and Habiba Tanko as Maimuna, all contribute to the film’s depth. Ummi Baba-Ahmed’s portrayal of the mother-in-law is particularly noteworthy—a character who, while not fond of Zainab, remains somewhat bearable, giving a performance that is understated yet impactful.

A Few Critiques

If I were to critique the film, I would say it was a bit too slow at times, and some scenes felt unnecessary. The cinematography, while adequate, didn’t quite reach the level of brilliance I was hoping for. But even with these flaws, it was a worthwhile watch.

A Bittersweet Conclusion

In the end, the movie stays true to its title, “With Difficulty Comes Ease.” Life does get a bit easier for Zainab. She manages to keep her baby, avoiding another miscarriage, and it seems like she’s on her way to finding peace. It’s a story of hope, resilience, and the strength to carry on, no matter the odds. I would give it a solid 7.5 out of 10.
