The Nigeria Police Force conducted a raid on the second floor of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Complex in Abuja last Wednesday, seeking incriminating documents related to an international “subversive” element allegedly threatening Nigeria’s democracy. Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi explained on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the August 7, 2024, operation was targeted at an office used by a suspect housed by the NLC, and not the NLC headquarters on the 10th floor.
Adejobi asserted that the raid recovered evidence supporting claims that the suspect is a significant threat to national security. The suspect is alleged to be involved in subversive activities, including connections to foreign identities such as Russian and British nationals.
The NLC condemned the raid, stating that heavily armed security personnel invaded their head office around 8:30 pm, seizing documents. This action has drawn criticism from both local and international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International.
Adejobi defended the raid, clarifying that it was not related to the recent #EndBadGovernance protests but was part of a broader forensic investigation involving the suspect’s alleged foreign connections and frequent travels. He emphasized that the NLC was not under investigation, and the raid was necessary to gather evidence against the suspect, who is purportedly part of a syndicate with arrested members.
The police have accused the suspect of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, with Adejobi asserting that plans to destabilize the country and destroy its democratic institutions have been uncovered. The authorities are committed to continuing their investigation and obtaining further evidence to counteract the alleged threat posed by the suspect.
