Fuel Crisis Returns to Lagos: Queues, Black Market Thrive

The Federal Government had through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, warned Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) retailers against illegally selling of the product as the scarcity of it lingers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and th neighboring Nasarawa and Niger states.

The NMDPRA had issued this warning in a statement via its official X account, urging retail outlets to refrain from servicing black marketers.

This development is coming on the heels of the deepening fuel scarcity in the Nation’s capital, which has now led to long, drawn-out queues in the few filling stations selling fuel.

Recall that two weeks ago, the NNPCL in a statement by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye had attributed the scarcity to a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.

Meanwhile, fuel scarcity still remains a reoccurring decimal without permanent solution.

In July, Billy Gillis-Harry, the President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association, PETROAN, urged the Nigerian government to set up a war council to fight the continued occurrence of fuel scarcity in the country.

What They’re Saying

“NMDPRA embarks on a war against the illegal sale of petroleum products, especially PMS in jerrycans.

“Filling stations are advised to desist from servicing illegal peddlers, failure to do so would result in the suspension of retail licenses,” it warned.
