In order to address the security issues plaguing the nation, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has promised to bolster border security and surveillance.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja to comptrollers of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the NIS CG underlined the necessity of strong border security measures to thwart illicit activities, like as terrorism and smuggling.

Nandap emphasised the significance of physical presence, surveillance, and data collecting in addressing security concerns beyond national borders.

She challenged the comptrollers with being upright and vigilant in carrying out the service’s duties, stressing that personnel must be on top of border policing.

“The purpose of this gathering is for us to learn how to keep our borders safe and secure. I’m sure you’re all aware that when I assumed duties, I travelled around to assess the border. “I went around to find out what we weren’t doing right at our borders.” How do we ensure we are efficient and effective?” she asked.

Nandap highlighted that the country faces significant security issues, which require the service’s full attention.

What they’re saying

She stated:

“Although we have been able to contain the problem rather successfully thus far, we cannot afford to be complacent.

“As Comptrollers, you must undertake regular surveillance and be physically present on the ground to understand the issues your teams confront. “The days of remote work are finished; it’s time to get hands-on

“We can no longer allow the influx of non-Nigerians into our country; it’s time to face our responsibilities and address these security challenges head on.

“We must ensure our borders are safe and secure. I reviewed our border restrictions and highlighted areas for improvement. “We need to be efficient and effective in our operations,” she explained. The NIS CG thus mandated the use of a reporting form to ensure standardised reporting, stating that it would help strengthen border policing.”We have officers in all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs), but they are not being used efficiently. We must alter this in order to improve our service delivery.

“There are particular hotspots that are recognised for migrant smuggling and terrorism; you must be aware of the crimes that occur in your area.

“To propose solutions and be relevant to the state government, you must first analyse your state and understand the patterns of crime,” she stated.

Bottom Line

Strengthening border security is vital, particularly in a country like Nigeria, with its vast and often porous borders that are susceptible to illegal activities.

The focus on active, on-the-ground engagement by immigration officers is a significant shift from the often criticized remote and passive approaches of the past. By insisting that comptrollers and their teams be physically present and vigilant, Nandap is reinforcing the need for accountability and responsiveness in border management.
