Floods has taken over the Chikaji community in Kaduna State’s Sabon Gari Local Government Area, causing widespread destruction and displacement.

On Monday, severe rains washed away some houses, causing the flood. Although no lives were lost, the impact on the community was tremendous. Affected residents requested immediate aid from government authorities and donors.

The village leader of the community, Auwal Sani-Danbaba, voiced frustration to reporters on Tuesday that, despite the gravity of the situation, no assistance has been received thus far.

“It also washed away sections of the LEA Primary School and a large portion of the Hayin Ojo Cemetery.

“Many graves have been left open, and some flood victims are being sheltered in the community.

“But, so far, no one has died as a result of the catastrophe. We urgently require assistance in rebuilding our houses and livelihoods. “We urge the government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to our aid,” the village chief stated.

Suleiman Liman, Chief Imam of Chikaji Central Mosque, declared that an emergency meeting has been called to handle the cemetery’s immediate issues and provide assistance to flood victims.

Mallam Aminu, a flood victim, expressed thanks that the disaster occurred during the day, enabling for easy evacuation. According to reports the majority of flood victims are temporarily squatting with relatives or less affected households.

Bottom Line

The flooding in the Chikaji community of Kaduna State highlights a recurring issue in many parts of Nigeria—severe flooding due to heavy rains, which leads to widespread destruction, displacement, and significant disruption to the lives of affected residents.

The situation in Chikaji, where homes, a school, and even a cemetery have been damaged, underscores the vulnerability of many communities to natural disasters, particularly in areas with inadequate infrastructure and poor drainage systems.
