Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has disclosed that Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage name Rema, was a backstage performer at his 2016 inauguration.

Obaseki celebrated Rema’s accomplishments in the music business in a post on X on Friday, pointing out that in just eight years, he had become a worldwide star.

“Only a few could have imagined that #heisrema, who was one of the backstage acts at my inauguration in 2016, would achieve global sensation status by 2024,” the governor said, expressing his pride in Rema’s journey.

Obaseki also praised the accomplishments of the state’s women’s football team, the Edo Queens, who have dominated West Africa and are on the verge of assuming supremacy in Africa.

”Edo Queens, who joined our women’s football league only three years ago, would go on to conquer West Africa and establish African dominance. However, these are only a few examples of the Edo nation’s revival.

“I sincerely appreciate all of the well-known visitors and locals who came to the banquet honouring Edo State’s 33rd anniversary of founding.

“ We have painstakingly worked together to put our beloved state back on the path to greatness,” he continued.

He commended everyone’s efforts to bring the state back to its former glory and gave everyone the assurance that, come November, he would pass the keys to a capable team member, guaranteeing advancement and continuity.

“By the grace of God, by November, I will hand over the baton of administration to a team player who will continue the race of governance and maintain the upward trajectory we have started,” according to him.

Bottom Line

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s reflection on Rema’s journey from a backstage performer at his 2016 inauguration to a global music sensation highlights the governor’s pride in local talent and the broader achievements within Edo State.

This story serves as an inspiring narrative about the potential for success and recognition of local talent on the world stage.
