Netanyahu Under Pressure as Biden Criticizes Lack of Action on Ceasefire Deal

Amid growing pressure from international bodies for a ceasefire agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under intense scrutiny following the death of six hostages killed by Hamas militants.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed dissatisfaction on Monday, stating that he believes Netanyahu is not doing enough to secure a ceasefire deal. Biden mentioned that he was close to presenting a final proposal for a deal to release hostages held by Hamas in Gaza but indicated that Netanyahu’s efforts to secure such an agreement were insufficient.

This statement from a key ally of Israel has intensified criticism of Netanyahu, fueling speculation that he is not fully committed to agreeing to a ceasefire and facilitating the release of hostages. Protests have erupted in Israel, with citizens reacting strongly to the deaths of the six hostages, arguing that the tragedy could have been avoided if Netanyahu had taken more decisive action to secure the deal.

President Biden himself has faced criticism for his handling of the situation, particularly for his continued support of Israel’s offensive in Gaza. After Israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages over the weekend, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old American-Israeli, Biden was questioned about Netanyahu’s efforts. When asked whether he believed Netanyahu was doing enough to secure a hostage deal, Biden simply replied, “No,” without elaborating further.

When asked if a final hostage deal would be presented to both sides this week, Biden stated, “We’re very close to that.” He added, “Hope springs eternal,” when questioned about the likelihood of the deal’s success.

On Monday, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were scheduled to meet with the U.S. hostage negotiation team to discuss ongoing efforts toward securing the release of the remaining captives.

Why It Matters

The pressure on Netanyahu and the international focus on Israel’s actions underscore the complexity and urgency of the situation. As tensions escalate, the outcomes of these negotiations could significantly impact regional stability and the broader geopolitical landscape.
