The Minority Caucus of the Nigerian House of Representatives has demanded an immediate reversal of the recent increase in petrol prices. According to the caucus, this price hike will inevitably heighten the suffering of Nigerians, already grappling with harsh economic realities.

The Call for Transparency and Fairness

In a statement released on Thursday, the caucus, led by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, criticized the decision to unilaterally increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). They argued that the move lacks transparency, accountability, and fairness—core principles that should guide policies impacting the daily lives of citizens. The group expressed concern that the price hike would further exacerbate Nigeria’s already deteriorating economic situation.

Chinda emphasized the need for urgent government measures to address the link between economic hardships and growing social unrest. “Rather than create conditions that worsen the economy, the government should focus on solutions to alleviate these dire conditions,” Chinda said.

Why It Matters

Nigeria is currently facing an economic storm, with rising inflation, soaring unemployment, and Naira depreciation. In this already fragile economic environment, any increase in fuel price, an essential commodity as far as the marketplace and livelihood of Nigerians are concerned will have far-reaching effects. Petrol price hikes are directly linked to rising transportation costs, which in turn raise the prices of food and other essential goods and services. As these costs climb, the purchasing power of millions of Nigerians will be further eroded, driving more families into poverty.

Additionally, the arbitral setting of the price for petrol does not align with the core foundation of the Nigerian Oil Company, in this case, the NNPCL is originally supposed to protect the interest of Nigerians and the government in the Petroleum industry. The lack of stakeholder consultation in the decision-making process raises concerns about governance and representation. Ignoring the input of the National Assembly, which represents the interests of the people, risks undermining public trust in leadership.

The Social and Political Implications

The Minority Caucus warned that these economic conditions could lead to social unrest. Already, protests against economic hardship are growing, and the caucus fears that continued disregard for the public’s plight could lead to widespread chaos. In their view, this government must heed the lessons from previous national protests, which were triggered by deteriorating economic conditions and perceived bad governance.

The Bottom Line

The Minority Caucus is urging the Federal Government to reverse the petrol price increase immediately. They stress the need for more sustainable, long-term measures to stabilize the economy without further burdening the already struggling populace. If these issues are not addressed promptly, there is a real risk of escalating social unrest, further destabilizing the nation’s fragile economic and political landscape.
