Governor Caleb Mutfwang has decided it’s time to shake things up again. On Saturday, he dissolved the Local Government Transition Implementation Committees across all 17 local government areas of the state, leaving the people with yet another round of political suspense.
According to a statement from his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the governor’s next move is to let Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) take over running things until the long-awaited local government elections finally happen on October 9, 2024. In the meantime, the governor seems pretty pleased with the job these committees have done so far, applauding them for their “exemplary leadership” and “dedication.” But if everything’s been so great, one might wonder, why the constant changes?
Let’s not forget that this is the same governor who already made headlines back in June 2023 by kicking out the previously elected local government council officials to install these now-dissolved transition committees. Now, with elections on the horizon, the stage is set for yet another shuffle, and it’s anybody’s guess who will come out on top.
Still, Mutfwang couldn’t resist a pat on the back for these committee heads, praising their impact on local development and urging them to keep their fingers in the political game. His message? Stay close to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and keep supporting the local elections. After all, the governor’s still aiming to run an “inclusive, transparent, and accountable” government.
What does this all mean for Plateau citizens? Well, for now, they’re stuck with the DPMs until they finally get to vote for who’s next in line.
