Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup in Berlin as he continues to battle back from ongoing fitness issues. The 38-year-old Spaniard, who hasn’t competed since going out to Novak Djokovic in the second round at the Paris Olympics, cited concerns about his capability to deliver his best level.
The 22-time GS winner was earlier targeting a return for the Laver Cup from 20-22 September, before he opted to step down in favor of players that are better placed to represent Team Europe.
“I’m so sad to announce that I won’t be able to participate at the Laver Cup,” Nadal said. “This is a team event, and I have to think about what is better for the team. I wish you the best of luck.

Nadal has played in the Laver Cup a year ago, teaming up with his longtime rival Roger Federer during the Swiss star’s final match.
The once world number one has slid out of the top 150 in the rankings after an injury-ridden couple of years, but he is optimistic about a complete recovery.
