In the aftermath of the Kano State Government’s failure to meet an agreement with the medical doctors in the state, the state chapter of the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners has set October 1, 2024 for an indefinite strike.
The secretary of the association in the state, Dr. Anas Idris Hassan, had made this announcement while addressing newsmen on the outcome of their meeting on Saturday.
Anas had said that despite reaching an agreement with the Kano State Government in June, their demands were still to be met.
He had also emphasized that the government had not addressed the issue of the post-COVID-19 hazard allowances which was already paid by the Federal Government in 2021 but for some reason, it was yet to be paid by the Kano government.
In addition, Anas disclosed that newly employed medical doctors, who were hired by the Kano State Government in September 2023, have not been paid their salaries.
There was also the issue of the dilapidated state of Kano hospitals, the lack of essential medical equipment, and the doctor-to-patient ratio in the state, a fact Anas had lamented was significantly lower than the World Health Organization’s standard.
All these factors listed have left the medical practitioners with no option but to embark on the strike on October 1.
